Children cannot play or learn successfully if they are anxious and unhappy. The pre-school aims to help parents help their children to feel comfortable in the pre-school, to benefit from what it has to offer, and to be confident that their parents will return at the end of the session.
The following are extracts from the pre-school settling in policies.
  • Children are able to start at the pre-school from 2 years 6 months old.
  • Parents are encouraged to visit the pre-school with their own children during the weeks before an admission is planned.
  • Parents and families will be supported in the pre-school for as long as it takes for children to settle, and then throughout the child's time at the pre-school.
  • Parents, of children who seem to be taking a long time to settle in to the pre-school, will be supported and re-assured.
  • New families will be introduced into the pre-school on a staggered basis, e.g. two new children per day for a week rather than all at once.
  • Parents will, where appropriate, be encoured to separate from their children for a brief period at first, gradually building up to longer absences.
As part of their joining pack (which costs £20), children are given a pre-school sweatshirt, parent's handbook and a school bag in which they are encouraged to borrow a book from the school library.  Copies of committee meeting minutes, and other important paperwork are given to parents via their child's school bag.

Parents are encouraged to visit the pre-school, during school hours, to see first hand how the pre-school operates and to talk to the staff. The pre-school can be contacted (during school hours) on 01252 510449 or by email.

Once parents have decided that Southwood Family Pre-school is right for their child, a completed application form should be returned to the pre-school along with a registration fee of £5.00. The pre-school staff encourage parents not to apply during their initial visit but to take the form away, have time to think, and then contact the pre-school again if they wish.
